PEPPER is a public-private plateform made to accelerate production of validated tests in Europe.
Further research is needed to understand mechanisms at play and establish new assays, supported by large scale research programs. PEPPER’s purpose is to lead towards the validation of these assays.
To lower the exposure to endocrine disruptors of both the populations and the environment, thanks to the pre-validation of endocrine disruptors characterization methods.
Some existing lists of potential or suspected EDs feature thousands of substances, whereas others only feature a couple of dozens. Now is the time to mutualise our efforts in order to leave this uncertainty behind and work collaboratively to identify a list of EDs.
“An endocrine disruptor is an exogenous substance or mixture that alters function(s) of the endocrine system and consequently causes adverse health effects in an intact organism, or its progeny, or (sub) populations.” WHO, 2012.
In order to identify a substance as an endocrine disruptor, one need assays which are accepted by all and embedded in regulations.
Research for tools allowing to characterize a risk is not always complete; and even so, existing assays have yet to be validated by international authorities.
Very operational research is needed in order to ensure the reproducibility and robustness of assays and, following therefrom, international validation allowing for their official and widespread use..
Our association sits at the heart of the pre-validation process for endocrine disruptors (EDs) characterization methods.
The end goal is to better protect human health and the environment from EDs.
PEPPER is the missing link between upstream research and operational applications.
PEPPER will serve as a catalyst for translational research and stimulate the development of tools to monitor or limit human exposure to endocrine disruptors.
